Surcharge for shipping Class 9 batteries

Some lithium-ion batteries may not be shipped as regular parcel or pallet shipments. Batteries that fall under dangerous goods Class 9 require specialized transport and additional handling. That is why a shipping surcharge applies to shipments containing this type of battery.

This surcharge is applied automatically in the shopping cart as soon as one or more Class 9 batteries are included in the order. The surcharge applies per shipment, not per battery.

Why does this regulation apply?

Loose lithium-ion batteries are classified for transport under UN3480 – Lithium ion batteries. Under the ADR regulations for road transport, lithium-ion batteries above 100 Wh generally fall under Class 9 dangerous goods.

Additional requirements apply to handling and shipping. As a result, specialized transport is required and a surcharge applies.

For smaller lithium-ion batteries, an exemption often applies under ADR Special Provision 188. This exemption only applies if all conditions are met, including the limit of 100 Wh per battery.

When does no surcharge apply?

For loose lithium-ion batteries of 100 Wh or less, no Class 9 surcharge applies.

If you order batteries that do fall above this limit, it may be more efficient to order several units at once. The surcharge applies to the shipment as a whole, not to each individual battery.

We understand that this regulation does not always feel logical, but we are required to follow these transport rules. This ensures that your order is shipped safely and correctly.
